{Review} Palmer’s Deep Conditioning Protein pack

Summer, swimming in pools, tanning at the beach, hot sunny days, dips in sea water, color treatments, all of this dehydrates your hair and this is where I find myself. I had to try this protein filled hair mask after … Continue reading

{Spa Day} Brigit Filmer Detoxifying Body Wrap Treatment

I was so excited when I saw an update on the Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin Facebook page (follow here)… They were offering a special on the Detoxifying Body wrap treatment, thankfully I had taken a half day at work on the Friday and so I quickly phoned to book an appointment. If you are a #Durbanite you will know that Brigit Filmer needs no introduction, this award winning Day Spa is pure luxury and indulgence.

The spa describes the treatment as follows:

Detox Full Body Wrap (75 minutes) This is a complete, highly targeted and effective body treatment that shows excellent progressive results. It uses mineral clays, essential oils and specialised techniques to stimulate circulation and detoxify while firming and toning the body contours that are prone to cellulite.

I was so ecstatic to book my treatment and I nearly skipped up the M13 to the spa – as I entered Brigit Filmer I was greeted by the friendly receptionist and told to have a seat because Nomvula would be right with me, with ants in my pants I sat but soon got up and looked around the sales area in the reception. Soon enough Nomvula came through and escorted me to the treatment room, this room with spa bed sitting center stage was elegantly decorated with an emphasis on natural, natural decor on the mirror, natural light streaming through the window and a natural stone finish on the shower floor.

I was given my instructions… spa panties and on the bed, cover yourself in towels… but I was disobedient and wore my bikini bottoms that I bought with me – those didn’t last long and next time I’ll be sure to wear the spa panties from the start! Nomvula re-entered the room and prompt told me about the treatment, we were starting with a full body scrub, head to toe (even between the toes – which made me giggle!) and all that’s in between. Nomvula started the treatment, the scrub was just the right consistency so you knew you were banishing any dead skin cells to their doom, and there was a beautiful “earthy” smell to the scrub – according to Nomvula the scrub is made on site and is all natural.

Once my body was scrubbed – which roughly takes 20minutes – it was time to hop into the shower for the first time… There would be many showers that day! Nomvula ran the shower until the water was the perfect temperature and told me when I get back it’s spa panties time (cringe!) in order to apply to clay mask over an application of body oil. After my amazing shower – where I made sure to get every inch of scrub off (as instructed)- I hopped back onto the bed and readied myself for the clay mask. If you’ve ever had a scrub you’ll know that the spa bed is lined with plastic to wrap you up like a mummy but the plastic also becomes rather sticky… So be sure to carefully navigate the bed. Nomvula began to apply the mask and oil, to cleanse, moisturize and detoxify my body while I was wrapped up and soon the mask was applied and I was cocooned in plastic and towels and had a head massage as the clay went to work – heavenly!

I’m pretty sure people fall asleep at this stage of the treatment and Nomvula agreed. After what felt like hours Nomvula “woke” me up and asked me to shower again – “making sure you wash off all the mask” – well this time I failed and left some behind my knee. Again the shower was perfect and I readily hopped up onto the bed again for a drainage massage and with another massage oil. Nomvula was a tiny lady but boy did she have some strength in her hands, during my massage she really worked the tension that I carry in my shoulders and soon I was again feeling lulled to sleep! While I was having the massage I couldn’t tell how long the treatment had taken – while I knew there was a time limit, It felt like I had been in the treatment room for the rest of the afternoon – delightful!

It turns out the treatment lasted only an hour and a half.  Well, it was the longest hour and a half I have ever had in my life and possibly one of the best!! How did I feel afterward, well I joked going in that I wanted to be puddle-like on the way out and I sure was, I was relaxed and refreshed, my skin felt so soft and smooth and I could already feel the benefits of the scrub and wrap. This is definitely the type of treatment one gets at the end of winter to get rid of the dead skin and toxins that have been stored up in your body during the cold weather. I’m definitely going to head back for another – I hope to one day be like the client that Nomvula has visiting her once a week for the wrap!

The Oyster Box Spa

So if you read my post earlier last week you will know that I was treated to Mio Skincare’s Get Waisted treatment at The Oyster Box Spa. Now for those of you who are not from Durban, you may not … Continue reading

Mio Skin Care: Get Waisted

I was very lucky to be asked to try out the Mio Skincare’s Get Waisted treatment, now the first thing you need to know about me is… I don’t like people touching my tummy partially because I have a tummy, and partly because my brother spent years irritating me by placing his hand on my tummy any chance he got. Believe me, It’s irritating, so to try and step out of my comfort zone I decided to try the Get Waisted treatment, a tummy sculpting session that will leave you feeling slimmer, toned and less bloated.  I was thoroughly spoilt because I was privileged enough to be treated to this treatment in The Oyster Box’s Spa… I mean seriously, this spa is world class luxury and I got to whittle away here during a half day off work – sheer relaxation!

DestinationThis is how relaxed I felt after my treatment.

If you haven’t heard of Mio Skincare then you and I were in the same boat. Up until about two years ago I hadn’t really heard of Mio Skincare, and I certainly hadn’t been able to have one of their luxurious treatments because had I had a treatment back then I would never have forgotten their name! According to Trissann, who did my amazing treatment Mio has been in South Africa for roughly 5 years, they have recently been through a re-branding which is also why some people haven’t heard of their treatments, Get Waisted was previously called ‘Boot Camp’ – this name rung a few bells in my head.

So Mio Skincare has this to say about their treatments:

Our high intensity, high energy body treatments, target the key concerns of women – cellulite, tummies, bust and upper arm wobble –but these are no ordinary spa treatments. Each Mio High Intensity Treatment will make a visible lasting difference – lifting, tightening, sculpting, increasing firmness and smoothness in all trouble spots.

And this to say about Get Waisted:

If excersize and diet alone are not giving you the firm, taut tum you want, you need to Get Waisted. In less than an hour your tummy will feel slimmer, tighter, more toned and less bloated. Powerful actives will increase the energy within your skin and our special Mio massage techniques will firm and resculpt reducing wobble and love handles.

Mio-girlSo on to my treatment day… Thankfully I thought to book my monthly half day off for this great treatment and honestly I thought that I would be in the spa for perhaps an hour and a half, I also thought that the treatment only deals with your tummy… Boy was I wrong!! My appointment was booked for 1pm, which left me plenty of time to get from Westville to Umhlanga (and I even had a few moments to shop!). I arrived at The Oyster Box, checked in at the boom and was told to go Straight and then take a left… well, the left turn would have taken me in to a parked car so I figured I would turn right. Up two ramps I went to get a parking and then down the elevator to the ground floor aka Spa Level. I then reached the Spa door, pressed the buzzer and was slightly confused when I nearly walked in to the mens change rooms. I had come in the back entrance – rest assured I was told some people do use this entrance. (Whew!)

After checking in, I was given my locker key and sent off to change… I donned my robe and the it was off to the complimentary snack bar on the second level. I was welcomed with a ‘welcoming foot cleansing ritual,’ I dipped my feet into the water infused with essential oils and told to choose a stone to represent how I wanted to feel once the treatment happened. My options were ‘ B Grateful’, ‘B Relaxed’ and ‘B Loved’ as work and life have been rather stressful I decided to choose ‘B Relaxed.’ But I also knew that no matter which stone I had chosen the likely-hood of me feeling that emotion would be incredibly high. I warned Tressann about my intolerance of tummy touching and she set my mind at ease that this would be one relaxing and fantastic treatment. Once my feet were cleansed I was told to lie on the bed with the bolster under my knees, my feet were placed in heated booties and believe me the relaxing had begun.

I’m quite chatty during the treatment and Tressann was great, chatting with me when I had my chatty moments and keeping silent while I was quiet and relaxing. Tressann also explained exactly what she was doing at each point and the benefits of each step, and in all honestly I should have recorded her because this is a very detailed treatment.

The treatment starts with a cleanse and exfoliation using Mio’s signature ‘Triple Buff’ product which contains pumice and micro volcanic lava (all perfectly rounded so as not to cause micro-cuts on your skin), it also contains Glycolic Acid and pineapple and papaya enzymes. At this point of the treatment I was still a little squeamish of the fact that someone other than myself was touching my tummy, but during the application I started to relax more and more.

The ‘Triple Buff’ was removed with warm toweling gloves and afterwards the ‘Get Waisted’ product was massaged into my stomach, side, and nearly around my spine! (literally this massage is not just your tummy, be prepared for most of your abdominal section to feel the ‘Get Waisted’ love.) The massage stimulates your colon, it increases your circulation, assists in lymph drainage and aids in the breakdown of toxins. Tressann mentioned that cellulite is often forgotten about when it comes to massages (if I don’t acknowledge it – it’s not there… right??) and because of the make up of fat cells the blood doesn’t flow through to the skin as easily in heavily celulite areas – by massaging these areas you increase the blood flow which can help with the suppleness of skin as well as the ‘breaking down’ of these fatty cells.

So I was oiled, gelled and creamed into a state of relaxation and then… along came the ‘Get Waisted Alginate Rubberising Mask‘ and this was probably the most fun in the whole treatement – or at least removing it was. Tressann applied the mask on my tummy, from panty line to the bra line (this is serious tummy business), before she applied she made sure that I was not alergic to any sea-related ingredients as the mask uses the wonders of the ocean (and more) to slim, tighten, detoxify and tone the skin. The mask is applied over the other ‘Get Waisted’ products so that it can literally push the goodness into your layers of skin.

Tresssan wrapped me in plastic and warned me that the mask may start to tingle and heat up slightly – I didn’t really experience this. The mask was left on for about 15 -20 minutes (I think, time was such a blur I thought I had been in the treatment for the full day!!) and while the mask was on my tummy, Tressann got busy doing a lymph drainage massage on my arms. This although slightly painful at times was so relaxing, I lay covered in plastic with a heated neck cushion and an eye mask over my eyes enjoying every moment of it.

When Tressann was ready to remove the mask she asked me if I wanted to have a peak first… Hell Yeah! This mask literally rubberizes and I thought that I could walk out with it still on and give people the hebbie jeebies! Tressan removed the mask pretty much in one go, a quick lift under each side and *pop* off it came (even the part that was in my belly button!).

After popping off the mask I was smothered in another layer of ‘Skin Tight’ which helps to remove dead skin cells, even out pigmentaion, and fight against aging. My skin felt firm, fab and ready to take on the rest of the afternoon. The session was finished off with an application of the famous ‘Boob Tube’ bust cream which keeps delicate skin toned, bright and wrinkly free with super sag protection – like hello can we just bathe in this please 🙂

I left my treatment feeling like I had woken up in paradise, I messaged my mother saying that if I ever went missing they could find me hidden away in a crevice as the Oyster Box with a ‘Get Waisted’ treatment in progress. Surely something that feels that good should not be legal!! Well, I’m glad that it is.

A huge thank you to Mio Skincare, Poise Brands, Danielle, and The Oyster Box Spa for having me! Oh and p.s. Both Tressan and Jackie (the Head lady at The Oyster Box) both said that ‘Get Waisted’ is one of the most fantastic treatments – if they say it as professionals, it must be true 🙂 ) By the way… I strictly stick to the no camera’s in the spa rule, so I’m sorry this post doesn’t have many pictures.

Fabulous Friday!

I’ve had a great week and this morning my day was topped off by a visit to ‘Brigit Filmer‘ one of the premier Spas in Durban! Yes, I know another spa day, but today was different.

I woke up early this morning after having downloaded iOS 7, my alarm didn’t go off as the jolly thing had to reset. Anyway I set up my phone and then rushed out to gym… Rushed through a super quick workout and then rushed home for a shower before preparing for the spa with Candy aka Yandy and Pam.

We had agreed to go for hydrotherapy (sauna, steam room, chill pool and jacuzzi) at ten. I of course was ever early and so checked out the gorgeous cosmetics… I will admit that I nearly jumped out of my skin when I found the OPI liquid sand and quickly scooped up the white/silver version called ‘solitaire.’
I also had a sneak peek of the gold color which wasn’t in stock called ‘Honey Rider’ what a lovely color!!

Anyway, we were brought through to our change room and put our things in our lockers, changed into cossies and donned our robes to head up to the hydrotherapy area. What a lovely relaxing time we had, first up the jacuzzi for some ‘bubble- therapy’ (as I like to call it), I had to laugh as I seemed to float in the jacuzzi instead of just sit… Also with my cossie on the double layer caught so many air bubbles that I had to laugh each time I emptied and it refilled.

From there it was on to the steam room… Now previously I’ve detested steam rooms, I’m not sure why but they always seem to make me cough… This time I may not have coughed but I did have a few times when trying to talk that my throat dried up. It was so relaxing in the steam room sitting and chatting, and not being able to see for all of the steam.

Next up the sauna… Grab your towels to sit on and relax in the dry heat of the sauna… It was incredibly warm in there and soon Yandy and I were sweating out all our worries and toxins etc.

We had a peak in both the Flotation room as well as the Rasul… Oh how I wish I could have a Rasul! I plan on booking one soon. You go through to a room, you are given mud to apply to your body, from then your room is filled with steam and then once that dissipates the ceiling showers you in a tropical rain shower! Relaxation – yes, totally cool – double yes!!
Also flotation therapy, floating in a pool with goggles, eat plugs and relaxing stuff… Supposedly they use light therapy and sound therapy, it sounds kinda freaky but amazingly relax.

That was the beginning of my relaxing third long weekend this September, this is going to be the nicest one as I’m only having to be back at work on Wednesday next week. From then I only work two days where I’m training a friend to take over my job and then it’s my last long weekend. And the following Tuesday (the first) I start my new job!

I’m excited for tonight as tonight we have PURE: One Night Only happening. It’s the eighth year that Pure is on and it keeps getting better. For more information about it check out Pure Campaign

Manicure Monday & Makaranga

Ok, so this is the first time I am joining into Manicure Monday and it’s not even officially for nail polish on a manicure… it is actually for the beautiful color that I got for a pedicure.

I was blown away when a wonderful friend sent me a voucher for a back, neck and shoulder massage at Makaranga Spa a few weeks ago. I wasn’t sure when I would get to use it, but my mom and dad decided to have a spa day for my dads birthday and they decided to go to Makaranga. As it was my first Friday of not working (for September I am only working a 4 day work week) and I needed a bit of TLC I decided to join them and to have a pedicure as well as my massage.

And so on Friday the 6th of September we went to Makaranga for a morning of pampering followed by a lunch in the restaurant ‘Nonna’.

We were greeted by Gillian when we arrived, the wonderful manager of the spa and she is really perfect for her job! She is friendly, sweet and knows exactly what to say to make you feel pampered and preened! While we were waiting for our rooms to be readied etc. I was handed the nail polish swatches to go through. Man, there were so pretty colors there but one stood out the most, OPI – Hot & Spicy.

Upon choosing the color for my nails I was then lead into my room. What a peaceful and tranquil environment. Brigit came through to give me my massage, she was a wonderful lady with hands of an angel… or should I say with hands like a German masseur names Helga? She gave me an amazing back, neck and shoulder massage even massaging my head… I LOVE having my hair played with so this to me was pure heaven!!

After Brigit had finished, Candice then came in to do my pedicure. Candice is a twenty something, newly married, Afrikaans meisie who gave me some insider tips on who to next have a massage from and who the best waxer was.

Opi Hot and Spicy - Small OPI – Hot & Spicy

Candice and I chatted for quite a while during the pedi and we both decided that this was the perfect transitioning color for winter – spring – summer. I’m very much a bright color nail polish person and so this was the reasoning behind that, why be dull when we are going into SUMMER! As you can imagine I didn’t paint my nails I have no idea about the brush or consistency of the polish, I can tell you though that Candice did two coats of it over a clear base coat and I always find that beauticians never seem to use as much polish as we do when we paint our own nails. Just a tiny drop on the brush.

Another reason why I love this color, it seems to almost change color depending on what you are wearing and what the weather is doing. In the above picture it seems very orange, in the overcast weather I was in this week it seemed that way too, but on days in the sun it is almost a light orange, coral color and I LOVE that! Supposedly this color came out with the OPI Hong Kong collection, and I have read mixed reviews about people and this color, many people don’t like it as it seems too orange – do I think it’s too orange, no. I think that you do need to look at this color in both the sun and in indoor/ overcast lighting to see the true color that will be achieved on your nails.

How long did it last?? Well I’m typing this a more week after having the pedicure and I don’t have a single chip, break, crack or blemish on my toe-nails. I have also been pretty hard wearing on my feet, gym shoes, heels, pumps and slops have all been worn this week so I haven’t been being overtly careful with my toes. I think I will get at least two weeks wear out of this color without a problem but I will be sure to let you know any feedback about it.

If you would like to see a photo of this color on my toes be sure to look back in my instagram feed. (Instagram: Jane10net)

I would highly recommend both Makaranga Spa as well as OPI – Hot & Spicy.
